Drake risks $1M in Bitcoin bets on Stake. Rapper Drake may lose $1 million in two Bitcoin bets on the NBA finals and Stanley Cup via Stake.
In February, Canadian rapper Drake announced a large bet on the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the San Francisco 49ers at the Super Bowl. This worried Chiefs’ fans who know the “Drake curse,” a belief that teams backed by Drake lose, as he often loses his bets.
Recently, Drake placed two $500,000 bets on the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers to win their respective championships. The Mavericks and Oilers faced three losses each at the time of the bets, making their chances slim.
Both championships follow a best-of-seven format. Mavericks and Oilers needed wins to stay in the game. The Oilers won against the Florida Panthers in Game 4 on June 16. The Mavericks beat the Boston Celtics in Game 4 with a 122-84 score, leading the series aggregate.
The Mavericks outscored Boston 408-402 over four games. Winning Game 4 after falling behind 3-0 in a series is rare, but the Mavericks showed strong performance.
If either team loses, Drake would lose both $500,000 bets. For now, Drake seems on track. He bet using BTC via Stake, where he livestreams his gambling. In an Instagram post, Drake explained his bets, citing his Texan roots and a personal reason for the Oilers.
Drake stands to win $1.025 million if the Oilers win the NHL and $1.375 million if the Mavericks win the NBA. If he loses, Drake may still benefit from his deals with Stake, possibly receiving incentives for promoting his bets and livestreams. Drake likely has agreements to advertise the platform to a broader audience.
